Cedar Crest is unincorporated Bernalillo County, and that matters for septic work. Bernalillo County is the only county in New Mexico with its own onsite wastewater ordinance. It covers the unincorporated parts of the county. Cedar Crest is one of them, so a septic permit here goes through the county.
Just south on NM 14, the village of Tijeras is incorporated. Its septic permits go to the state environment department instead. Two towns a couple of miles apart, two different offices. We sort out which one your property falls under before anything gets ordered.
The steps run the same way either place. An application goes in and the site gets evaluated. The system goes in the ground, and an inspector signs it off before it is covered. The state rule keeps a septic tank 50 feet from a private drinking water well. A drainfield sits 100 feet off it. On a lot with its own well, that spacing decides where the system can go.
Census figures for Cedar Crest put piped natural gas at about one percent of occupied homes. Propane heats close to four in ten. Wood heats better than a third. Sandia Park and Sandia Knolls look the same way.
