Hidden leaks show up before you ever find the pipe. The water bill jumps, a wall or ceiling stains, or one spot on the floor stays warm. Some people hear water moving with every tap shut off.
We start at the water meter. With everything off, a meter that keeps creeping means water is going somewhere. From there we shut one fixture and one line at a time until the reading stops. Then we open the wall, cabinet or floor where the evidence points and repair the pipe.
Many Albuquerque homes sit on a concrete slab, so slab leak repair comes up often. A line under the concrete can sometimes be rerouted above the slab. Other times we open the floor right at the leak. If the water is coming from the water heater instead, that is water heater repair.
Albuquerque has many houses built from the 1950s into the 1970s. A lot of them still have galvanized steel supply pipe and cast iron drain pipe. Galvanized rusts from the inside and slowly closes up. You see it as brown water at first draw and weak pressure in the shower.
Repiping replaces the supply lines instead of chasing one pinhole after another. We can repipe a bathroom, a single run, or the whole house. Polybutylene is the other pipe we get called about. That gray plastic supply line was made from 1978 into the mid 1990s.
Polybutylene usually fails at the fittings, so one pinhole today often means more later. In Edgewood and the East Mountains, hard freezes are the other reason pipes split. Pipe in a crawl space, a garage or an outside wall freezes first. We repair the split section and replace hose bibs and shutoff valves that went with it.

Shower valve replacement is one of our common calls. A handle that drips, spins loose or will not get hot usually needs a new cartridge. Some valves take a cartridge and nothing more. Older ones need the whole valve replaced, which means opening the wall behind it.
Toilet repair covers a tank that runs and a bowl that rocks. A wax ring that fails at the floor is another common one. Toilet installation, faucet installation and garbage disposal installation are usually straight swaps. If a sink still drains slow after that, the line is the problem, and that is drain cleaning.
