Gas line installation is the work behind a new range, a shop heater or a fire pit. We run the pipe, size it for the appliance, and test it before anything gets lit. Gas line repair is the other half of the job. A fitting weeps, a buried run rusts through, or the gauge drops on a pressure test. We find the leak, cut out the bad section and test the line again. A new water heater or a boiler swap is a common reason we are out on gas work.

Every gas line starts with the appliance. We look at what it burns, how far the pipe runs and what else is on the line. That tells us the pipe size. An undersized line will starve a range or a water heater when two things run at once.
Then we pick the route. Black iron, flexible gas pipe or buried polyethylene, depending on where it goes and what the code allows. Outside, a buried run gets located first. New Mexico 811 marks the utilities for free, and state law says to call at least two business days ahead.
When the pipe is in, it gets pressure tested before any gas reaches it. We cap it, pump it up with air and watch the gauge. The gauge has to hold steady. If it drops, we find the spot and fix it before the appliance gets hooked up.
Yes. New Mexico Gas Company pipes natural gas through most of the metro, including Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Los Lunas. A lot of East Mountain homes sit outside that, so they run on propane from a tank in the yard. The piping work is much the same either way.
Propane and natural gas are not interchangeable at the appliance. They burn at different pressures, so a range that moves between them needs a conversion kit. New orifices and a different regulator come with it.
Altitude changes the math. Edgewood sits near 6,700 feet and the Albuquerque valley near 5,300. Under the national fuel gas code, appliance input ratings drop about 4 percent per 1,000 feet above 2,000. A gas appliance up here often needs a high altitude kit.
If you smell gas, leave the building first. Get everyone out, do not flip switches, and call New Mexico Gas Company or 911 from outside. The utility shuts the gas off and makes the area safe. Then call us at (505) 306-8285 for the repair on the house piping.
A gas smell near the range or a pilot that will not stay lit both point at the gas side. We use a pressure gauge to prove whether the line holds. If it does not, we isolate sections until the leak is narrowed down.
Most gas work needs a permit and an inspection. Who issues it depends on the address. The state Construction Industries Division covers much of the area, and Rio Rancho runs its own building department. We pull the permit and meet the inspector when the work calls for it.
