Some rooms never get comfortable. The back bedroom stays cold in January. The garage is too hot to work in by June. A ductless mini split heats and cools one room at a time, and it needs no ductwork. A mini split comes in two parts. A small outdoor unit sits on a pad or a wall bracket. An indoor head mounts on the wall inside, and a line set runs between them through a small hole. That makes it a good fit for a mountain home on baseboard and radiant heat that has never had cooling.

Mini splits solve rooms the rest of the house cannot reach. Think of an addition off the back, a casita, a garage shop, or a bedroom above the garage. That room bakes in July and stays cold in January. One indoor head handles it without touching the rest of the house.
Older homes in Albuquerque and the East Mountains are the other common case. Many heat with a boiler and hot water baseboard, so there is no ductwork in the walls. Some cool with an evaporative cooler, which does less once monsoon air turns muggy. A mini split adds real cooling to a room without adding ducts.
One outdoor unit can run a single indoor head or several. A single zone system covers one room. A multi zone system runs two to four heads, and each head has its own remote and its own setting. Multi zone costs more to install, because every head needs its own line set back to the outdoor unit.
Sizing comes first. We measure the room, then look at the windows, the insulation and which way it faces. Altitude counts here too. Edgewood sits near 6,700 feet and the Albuquerque valley sits near 5,300 feet.
Thinner air moves less heat across the coils, so equipment makers publish altitude tables for their units. We size against those tables instead of a sea level chart. Getting that wrong is how a room ends up with a unit that runs all day and never catches up.
The indoor head mounts high on an outside wall. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or a bracket, clear of snow and roof drip. A small hole through the wall carries the refrigerant lines, the control wire and the condensate drain. Condensate has to run downhill and outside, or a small pump moves it there.
Mini split repair calls start with a few common symptoms. The head blows air that is not cold. The outdoor unit ices over in a cold snap. Water runs down the wall under the head, or a code flashes and the unit quits.
We check the filters and the indoor coil first, because dirt causes a lot of this. A clogged condensate line is usually what puts water on your wall. Low refrigerant, a failed fan motor or a bad control board take more digging. Filters wash out in the sink, and rentals and small commercial spaces do better on a set schedule.
Winter up here is the real test for a heat pump. Cold climate models publish their heating output at low outdoor temperatures, down to 5 degrees and below.
