First we find where the blockage sits. One slow fixture means the clog is in that trap or the branch behind it. When several fixtures back up at once, the main line is the problem. A toilet that gurgles while the washer drains tells you the same thing.
Some people call it snaking, cabling or rooter service. A steel cable turns down the pipe and cuts through whatever is stopping it. We feel where it catches and how far in it sits.

Roots are the first suspect in the valley. Albuquerque restricted the planting of most elms and cottonwoods under a pollen ordinance passed in 1994 and amended in 2004. Grease is the second suspect. Albuquerque's water authority calls cooking grease one of the primary causes of sewer line blockages in homes and businesses. It cools on the pipe wall and catches everything that follows.
The third cause is the pipe itself. Cast iron and old clay lines go rough inside, and scale narrows the opening. A line that has settled into a low spot holds water and solids there. A clog that returns to the same spot every few months points at the pipe.
Landlords, property managers and repeat customers keep their drains on a maintenance plan. We clear the lines on a set schedule, then put in a bacteria or enzyme additive. The additive works on the grease and soap film that coats the inside of a drain line. A planned visit beats a tenant calling at ten at night.
Restaurants and commercial kitchens run harder on their drains. Albuquerque's water authority inspects food service businesses for compliance. Its ordinance requires a grease removal system cleaned at least every six months, and a grease hauler does that work. We keep the drain lines between the kitchen and that interceptor running.
