An emergency is water or gas you cannot control. A pipe that burst in a crawl space is one. So is a sewer backup in the tub, or a water heater pouring water on the floor. No water at all counts too.
Some things can wait for morning. A slow drip under the sink or a running toilet is usually a next day call. If you are not sure, call and describe what you see.
Emergency calls go to the front of the schedule. We take them 24 hours a day, at houses and at commercial buildings. On the phone we tell you where you sit in the line, then get there as fast as we can.
Find your main shutoff before you need it. In Albuquerque and Rio Rancho it is often in a box near the street. On a well or a small water system, look near the tank or the meter. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops, then open a low faucet to drain the pipes.
If the water heater is leaking, shut the cold water valve on top of it. On a gas unit, turn the gas control to off. On an electric unit, switch the breaker off. That keeps it from heating an empty tank.
If you smell gas, do not hunt for the leak. Leave the building, take everyone with you, and call the gas company from outside. Some East Mountain homes run on propane, so that call goes to the propane supplier. Once the building is safe, call us for the gas line repair.
Winter here is colder than most people expect. Albuquerque averages about 93 nights a year at or below freezing, on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. Sandia Park averages about 171 of those nights, and Moriarty about 181. The East Mountains sit more than 1,000 feet above the valley, so the cold holds longer.
Pipes freeze where the heat does not reach. Hose bibs, crawl spaces, garage walls and lines in an unheated casita are the usual spots. A frozen line can split, then leak hard when it thaws. If a faucet goes dry on a cold morning, shut the water off and call us.
On a freeze call we find the split, cut the bad section out and put new pipe in. Many repairs finish on the first visit. A failed water heater or an odd valve can need a part we pick up in the morning. We will tell you what holds it tonight and what the real fix is.
