Sewer line repair starts with a backup that will not stay fixed. The toilet overflows, the tub fills when the washer drains, then it happens again. The clearest sign is a backup that comes back. You clear the line, it runs a few weeks, then the tub fills again. Roots grow back into the same crack, and a sagging pipe keeps catching waste.
Watch for more than one drain acting up at the same time. A toilet that gurgles when the washer drains points at the main line. A sewage smell in the yard, a wet patch of ground, or a green strip of grass points underground.

Finding the break comes first. We run a cable and note how far it goes before it stops, then check where the ground is wet. A camera inspection can confirm a broken line, and we will say when one is worth doing.
Sometimes one section is bad and we replace that piece. Sometimes the whole lateral is the same tired pipe, and replacing the run is better. We dig the trench, pull the old pipe, set new pipe at the right slope and tie it in. New Mexico law says to call 811 two business days before digging so buried lines get marked.
We add cleanouts while the trench is open. A cleanout is a capped pipe at ground level that opens into the sewer line. With one near the house and one near the property line, the next blockage is easy to reach.
Census figures show close to half the homes in Albuquerque were built before 1980. In Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, out in the North Valley, the median home dates to 1969. Sewer laterals that old are often clay or cast iron, and roots find the joints.
In Albuquerque the pipe is yours further out than most people expect. The Water Authority owns and maintains only the main sewer line. The drains inside the building, the lateral under your property, and the pipe out to the street are private. A break near the curb is still the property owner's repair.
The Water Authority also tells owners to get a permit for sewer line repair or excavation. We handle that paperwork with you.
